Bar Centraal in Amsterdam-West

A hidden jewel at the Ten Katemarkt

Tucked away on a corner of the bustling Ten Katemarkt sits Bar Centraal, a cozy, effortlessly cool wine bar that brings natural wine to life in the most delicious way. It’s the second project by the team behind Glouglou, the OGs of pouring vins naturels in Amsterdam, and trust us: it deserves a spot on your wine radar.

Step inside and you’re immediately wrapped in warm light, lively chatter, and the scent of something good coming from the kitchen. The lighting is soft, the crowd relaxed, and the energy just right, vibrant without being loud. Whether it’s for the atmosphere, the kind staff, or simply handing over the wine list and saying “you choose”, I always walk away happily surprised.

This time, we were lucky to be seated at the chef’s table, right in the heart of the action, with flickering candles and front-row seats to beautifully plated dishes being crafted before our eyes.

La Reine, a Chardonnay

Not your average Chardonnay

And just when we thought it couldn’t get better, the wine arrived. We were poured a rare bottle of La Reine, a Chardonnay from Domaine Labet in Jura. Made from vines over 100 years old on a tiny 0.16-hectare plot, only one or two barrels are produced each year, completely natural, unfiltered, and unsulfured. It’s quietly exceptional, and the kind of wine that rarely appears on a wine list.

Sommelier Tom guided us through it all with genuine enthusiasm, sharing the story of Jura,  a small French wine region with deep roots and big character. Domaine Labet is one of its brightest stars, crafting expressive, soulful wines that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about Chardonnay.

Fair prices for top quality

The best part? Despite the high quality, prices are fair. Bar Centraal keeps their margins refreshingly modest, which means you can drink really well without breaking the bank.

Bar Centraal doesn’t try too hard, and that’s exactly its charm. It’s thoughtful, relaxed, and full of unexpected gems. The kind of place you’re always glad you chose.

Cheers!
